Desert Maternity Photo Session + Tips For Success

Most photographers recommend taking maternity photos between 28-34 weeks. Since I tend to carry big and the women in my family are known for giving birth to babies over 9 lbs, this mama got started a bit earlier with pictures. It is really amazing what the human body is capable of. Here is my number one reason why you might want to take maternity photos earlier in your pregnancy as I did.

Comfort. Yes, you want a nice bump for your pictures but you want to feel good during your photo session. We all tend to carry differently but pay attention to your body and when you feel is the right time for you. It is so much easier to navigate earlier in your pregnancy. Sometimes if you wait too far into your pregnancy, you experience more swelling. Daily tasks can also become a challenge let alone a photo shoot....in the desert...in heels!

Best tips to prepare for your maternity photo session include prepping your skin. Those horomones can do a number on our skin so definitely prepare beforehand to add to your beautiful glowing mama vibes. Here's a list of a few of my favorite skin prep products.

Work with your photographer and consider your location, your poses, hairstyle and clothing. Neutrals and light pinks will always photograph best. This may or may not be the event planner in me but if you are having an outdoor portrait session, check the weather ahead of time and create a rain plan if needed. Many moms opt for their partner to be in their photos so be sure to keep their schedule in mind as well. The more you plan ahead, the smoother the session will be.

The bonus of taking earlier maternity photos is that you can do another session later in your pregnancy if you are up for it. Afterall, creating memories is what life is all about. Here's to you Mama!
